Relax on board Balmoral as she bypasses coastal ports and heads inland via pretty waterways straight into three fascinating cities in Belgium and the Netherlands, where a host of world-famous sights and highlights await your discovery. After an overnight sail from Rosyth across the North Sea and along the winding Western Scheldt River, you’ll arrive first into Antwerp. Your ship will take you closer to the heart of the city and, as you’ll stop here overnight, you’ll have time to go ashore and explore at your leisure. Tucked away within the pretty cobbled streets of Antwerp – a city famed for its legendary diamond district – you’ll discover gems such as the magnificent Cathedral of Our Lady and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, which houses the works of Rubens and other Flemish masters. There are also chances to embark on a ‘beer trail’ tour and sample some of Belgium’s finest brews; or journey to the Battlefields of Waterloo, admiring the beautiful Flemish countryside en route. From Antwerp’s diamonds it’s on to another Belgian jewel, medieval Ghent. This culture-rich city is home to some of the country’s very best museums and most iconic landmarks, including the striking gothic structures of St Bavo’s Cathedral and the Castle of the Counts. The UNESCO-listed Belfry – which at 91-metres high is Belgium’s tallest – is not to be missed; while no time spent in Ghent is complete without tasting authentic Belgian chocolate expertly crafted by the city’s artisan chocolatiers. Finally, the unique diversity of the exciting Dutch capital is yours to experience after a relaxing early morning sail along the Nordzeekanaal. In Amsterdam you’ll be able to uncover the incredible history of Anne Frank House; visit the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum; and see the grand structures of the UNESCO-listed Canal Ring, and all at your own pace. Alternatively, for a typically Dutch experience, you may prefer to venture to the quaint windmill village of Zaanse Schans, followed by a tour to Edam to learn about how the local cheese is made.
