An impressive tuff cone has been carved by erosion into an outstanding natural sculpture, being a resting place for marine birds such as blue-footed bobbies and brown pelicans. One of the most beautiful white sand beaches of the Galapagos (swim or snorkel). View sea lions, sally lightfooted crabs, blue-footed bobbies. Behind the dunes, you find a coastal lagoon, which was visited in the past by the locals to extract salt, today it is home to some shorebirds such as stilts and plovers. The vegetation (as it is one of the oldest islands) shows some endemic species such as Scalesia incisa (flowering plant) only found on this island.
Kicker Rock is the vertical remnant of a former tuff cone less than 5 kms to the west of San Cristobal. When approaching Kicker Rock, Blue-footed Boobies, Nazca Boobies and Frigatebirds can be observed in the air, while sea lions can be seen along the shore
Arid volcanic landscapes provide a chance to watch for lava lizards, Galapagos Hawks, and Blue-footed Boobies. Hike to the top of Bartolome Island with your Silversea Expedition Team and witness one of the most beautiful panoramas in all of the Galápagos islands. Afterwards, enjoy time swimming and snorkelling from Golden Beach
Five (originally six) majestic shield volcanoes up to half-amillion years old pierce the arid landscape of Isabela, the largest and youngest island in the Galápagos. Aboard a Zodiac, you’ll look for an array of seabirds including Flightless Cormorants and penguins.
The low, lava-forged coast of Punta Espinoza is home to hundreds of marine iguanas that rest on the black rock of recent lava flows. Walk past high sandy areas, where marine iguanas lay their eggs, and along low, shallow mangrove ponds ringed with bright red Sally Lightfoot crabs
Tagus Cove is bordered by a steep rocky coastline and has for centuries offered shelter for ships and yachts. Galápagos Penguins and Flightless Cormorants are often seen here. On an included hike with your Silversea Expedition Team, visit Darwin Lake and look out for several land birds including Medium Ground-Finches, Galápagos Hawks, Yellow Warblers as well as Large-billed Flycatchers
Rich in history, this site is home to the post office barrel established around 1793, where pirates, buccaneers, whalers and others would leave their mail to be picked up by outbound ships. The tradition continues today, as visitors leave addressed postcards in the barrel and sort through left mail to deliver at home
Champion Islet is a small islet some 700 meters off the northeast coast of Floreana. It is one of four marine sites surrounding Floreana and offers excellent deepwater snorkeling opportunities. Curious sea lions approach the snorkelers while turtles slowly swim by and sharks, sting rays, and a high diversity of colorful fishes can usually be seen. During a Zodiac cruise around Champion Islet not only seabirds such as Nazca Boobies, Swallow-tailed Gulls, or Red-billed Tropicbirds will be seen, it is also possible to spot the rare Floreana Mockingbird.
Where in the world can you see an olivine beach, deciduous vegetation and pink flamingos all in one place? Only at Punta Cormoránt, one of the most interesting sites in the islands. You’ll learn about the formation of beaches as we land on the olive-green sand and walk to Flour Beach, a favourite nesting site for Green Sea Turtles. Floreana also offers some of the best snorkelling sites in the Galápagos.
Visit the Charles Darwin Research Station, which houses the Fausto Llerena Breeding Centre for giant tortoises and land iguanas. Guides will interpret the centre’s captive breeding and reintroduction programmes. Enjoy free time in town where local artists have created charming art galleries and corner cafés
Dragon Hill, or “Cerro Dragon” is named after its population of land iguanas. The site offers a beautiful view of the landscape and two small brackish lagoons where flamingos and other shore birds occasionally feed. Along the island’s trail, cross a beautiful “white forest” of Palo Santo (incense) trees and Galápagos cotton plants
More than 560 miles from the coast of Ecuador, the Galápagos Islands are renowned for their extraordinary biodiversity. Discover some of the world’s rarest flora and fauna on a cruise here.
