Magnificent Athens combines the fascinations of the ancient world with unique modern architecture.
Crete’s eastern corner is home to the resort of Agios Nikolaos, a port that leads the way to the island’s most significant ancient ruins. The ancient Minoans lived on Crete as far back as 2500 BC in a society that was by far the most advanced at the time. The ruins of the Minoan palaces at Knossos date from 1700 to 1500 BC and reveal remarkable achievements.

Try some kebabs, stuffed grape leaves called dolmas and a local dessert called beurrek, a cheese filled pastry. Although this “Pearl of the Black Sea” is now a bustling port of over a million inhabitants, Odessa still retains an old fashioned charm. Stretching along the semi-circle bay in the northwest corner of the Black Sea, it is a profusion of greenery and flowers. In 1905, it was the site of a workers’ uprising supported by the crew of the Russian battleship Potemkin; and here you can climb the legendary staircase which saw a battle between mutinying sailors and forces loyal to the Czar. Also worth a visit are the architecturally beautiful Odessa Opera and Ballet House, the Archeological Museum, impressive Spaso – Preobrazhenskiy Cathedral and nearby Passage shopping mall.
Located just 150 miles east of Bucharest, Constanta is the gateway to Romania’s beautiful capital, as well as to the beach resorts just to the north and south of the town. The poet Ovid described his years of exile here in his famous poems “Ponticae” and “Tristia;” his tomb in marked by a statue in the square that bears his name. The Old Town is graced by lovely French and Art Deco architecture, and the city also boasts a world-class archaeological museum.
Narrow cobbled streets wind between old houses and stone fences in this ancient Bulgarian port. Nessebur juts out into the Black Sea on a small peninsula connected to the mainland by a long, narrow isthmus, an architectural monument of Bulgarian culture that has been protected since 1987 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town was founded in the 6th century B.C. by Greek colonists, and the old quarter still displays relics of the many empires that have ruled here.
Istanbul unveils its rich history at every turn, while its vibrant present is just as much of a draw for visitors.
