In Port Vila, Vanuatu's energetic capital, you'll be greeted by friendly Bislama-speaking locals and street-side markets. Walk around the centre of town – you'll see a touch of French influence still remains in the form of bistros and murals. Cruise to Port Vila to explore the hidden waterfalls of the Mele Cascades, tucked away in the Mele village rainforest with plenty of gently sloping hiking trails. Check out Mama's Market, the cultural hub of Vanuatu, where you can sample local bananas or shop for traditional island handicrafts. Or take the 10-minute boat ride out to Pele Island: Here, you'll find picturesque beaches shaded by palm trees overlooking turquoise waters that are prime for snorkelling.
As the southernmost Loyalty island, Mare is the first to welcome the sun's golden rays in the morning. Untouched by the outside world, the island holds a wild beauty supported by environmentally sustainable tourism. The landmass itself is formed from layers of coral, and the entire island is honeycombed with secret freshwater lagoons, grottoes and sinkholes. Descend into Trou de Bone, a limestone cave leading to lush gardens and a natural pool. Airlie Beach is the Queensland coast's go-to spot for maritime adventure. It's the mainland town that allows the easiest access to the 74 incredible Whitsunday Islands — take the ferry out and spend your day relaxing by clear aqua waters at Whitehaven Beach or snorkeling among the heart-shaped portion of the Great Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Or stick to the mainland: Walk the Bicentennial Walkway along the Airlie Beach waterfront, popping into a cafe for a late-morning flat white (the Australian signature latte). Take a dip in Airlie Beach Lagoon, or head to Conway National Park, where you can hike your way through rain forest to panoramic views of the city and the harbor.
A friendly city, loved by residents and popular with tourists. More than just a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns offers plenty to do.
Once a sleepy fishing village, Port Douglas today is a resort town that doubles in population during peak tourist season from May to September. Located an hour's drive north of Cairns, the town's main attraction is its easy access to two World Heritage sites: Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. Head to Mossman Gorge in Daintree for bushwalking among lushly forested groves – the landscape here is up to 180 million years old, and some of its plant species may have coexisted with dinosaurs. Cruise to Port Douglas and take a reef-exploration tour, which allows you to snorkel among the coral, crustaceans and colourful fish. Or take a dip in the crystal-blue waters at Four Mile Beach, surrounded by rainforest views.
Willis Island is the only permanently inhabited island in the Coral Sea Islands Territory. Located beyond the Great Barrier Reef, this island stands 280 miles from Cairns. The only residents on the 7.7-hectare sandy island are a handful of Australian Bureau of Meteorology staff members working at the weather monitoring station. The main attractions are the sights you'll see as you cruise through the Coral Sea. Spot tropical birds like black noodies, sooty terns and wedge-tailed shearwaters. Cruise to Willis Island to see the Great Barrier Reef stretch beneath the turquoise waters and the exotic fish that swim here, including angel fish, clown fish and hammerhead sharks.
Eden means "a delightful place," which is what you can expect to see in New South Wales' most southerly town. Eden is known as one of Australia's best whale watching locations. Humpback and southern right whales can be spotted in Eden's Twofold Bay from September to November, as they migrate back to those chilly Antarctic waters. Natural attractions are the aim of the game in delightful Eden as well. Cruise to Eden to visit Ben Boyd National Park and walk along its rugged cliffs to Boyd Tower and Red Point Lookout.

The Sydney cityscape really is enough to take your breath away. Attracting visitors with its iconic harbour, glorious beaches and the stunning Blue Mountains to the west, Sydney hosts nearly half of all international visits to Australia. Life really is a beach in Sydney – this city boasts more than 40 of them. The glorious Bondi Beach is the most famous and the place to go to watch surfers catch waves. If you fancy a double dose of fun in the sun, take the popular Bondi Beach to Coogee Beach coastal walk – the stroll takes around two hours and features rock pools, secluded bays and magnificent clifftop views. It’s the perfect way to spend a sunny afternoon. If more active pursuits are what you're after, then why not enjoy a bridge tour of Sydney's iconic Harbour Bridge? Not for the feint of heart, these tours will take you to the very top of this 134 metre giant. You’ll see breathtaking views of Sydney, the Harbour and the Opera House. Taronga Zoo is also especially popular with visitors – here you’ll meet the cutest, cuddliest, most endangered and most downright dangerous (but not right up close) of Australia’s incredible wildlife.
The Great Barrier Reef
As one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, you’d expect great things from a visit here, and you can rest assured that you will not be disappointed! Larger than the Great Wall of China, this vibrant body of water is home to an abundance of wildlife and comprises of over 3,000 individual reef systems – an unforgettable experience for many, especially those who adore nature.
