A city where you’ll find centuries-old culture jostling for position next to cutting-edge technology – a fabulous blend of history and modernity that has to be seen to be believed.
Sendai is a city in Japan’s Tohoku Region, northeast of Tokyo on Honshu island. The remains of 17th-century Sendai Castle, built for samurai lord Date Masamune on Aoba Hill, overlook the city and include a museum of historic artifacts. The Sendai City Museum focuses on the history and culture of Japan’s Edo period, and displays Masamune’s samurai armor.
Explore Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan from the base of Hakodate or fall in love with the city itself.
Once Hokkaido’s bustling financial center, the small harbor city of Otaru is a popular weekend getaway for the Japanese. It offers a charming canal lined with early 20th-century brick and stone buildings, along with plenty of museums and restaurants, not to mention the unique herring mansions, built by wealthy fishermen during the 19th and 20th centuries. Sapporo, only 30 minutes by train from Otaru, is the 5th largest city in Japan and likewise offers a sought-after food scene, plentiful shopping, green spaces and galleries in spades. Foodies won’t want to miss Nijo Fish Market, a 100-year-old market favored by locals that’s also full of places to try regional specialties.
The port of Kodiak is located on the Chiniak Bay on the north-eastern coast of Kodiak Island, Alaska. Also known as the fishing port, Kodiak is famous for its fresh fish as well as its flora and fauna where the Alaskan brown bear, wild eagles and moose live.
Founded by gold miners in 1896, Homer still attracts adventurous travelers who love the great outdoors. It's particularly beautiful during the summer, when wildflowers are in bloom and the hills behind town are lush green. A great starting point is the Pratt Museum, featuring exhibits on native culture, history and fishing.
With a population of only about 200, the small and quirky hamlet of Whittier is the gateway to beautiful Prince William Sound as well as Anchorage, which is only 60 miles away. Established as a secret military outpost during World War II, Whittier now attracts visitors for its unspoiled glaciers and wilderness. Glacier cruises along Prince William Sound make for a memorable afternoon – think sheer fjords, seaside mountains and calving tidal glaciers. A picturesque train journey to Anchorage along the Alaska Railroad is another fantastic diversion; you’ll enjoy awe-inspiring views of Turnagain Arm Fjord and Portage Valley. Chugach State Park is also nearby and excellent kayaking and hiking opportunities abound.
Hoonah means "where the north wind doesn't blow" in the language of the Tlingit Indians, who make up about 70% of the population of this village on the lee side of Chichagof Island. However, wildlife outnumbers everyone, so watch for bears, eagles and humpback whales, which migrate here in the summer.
Super-scenic Ketchikan sits on the edge of Revillagigedo Island, surrounded by the verdant Tongass National Forest. Its waters are rich with Pacific salmon, a fact which drew native Tlingit and industrial fishermen here, not to mention an abundance of wildlife. Black bears can often be seen catching fish from passing streams, while birds of prey soar over glacial mountains.
Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful spots on earth, it’s no wonder that Vancouver is a popular spot for tourists looking to enjoy some fresh air and vibrant Canadian culture.

Tokyo, Japan - You’ll never forget a visit to the sensory explosion that is Tokyo. Capital of Japan, this is a city where you’ll find centuries-old culture jostling for position next to cutting-edge technology – a fabulous blend of history and modernity that has to be seen to be believed. Many cities can say they’re bustling, but few boast a pulsating traffic intersection that’s become a tourist attraction all of its own. To get a feel for Tokyo’s natural beauty, head to Yoyogi Park, where cherry blossoms are resplendent in spring and its ginko tree forest shimmers with gold in the autumn. City life slows down just a touch in this former Olympic village, which also served as a military parade ground and barracks for American soldiers after the Second World War. Modern Tokyo can be deftly explored at the Roppongi Hills complex. Drink in breathtaking panoramic vistas at the 52nd floor Tokyo City View, then peruse the exhibits at the Mori Art Museum. Indulge in traditional sushi and sake at one of the complex’s many restaurants, or sit back and watch the world go by in the Japanese landscape garden.
Alaska - To say that Alaska is beautiful would be a tremendous understatement. The first thing you notice when you reach America’s 49th state is the magnificent snow-capped mountains lining the distance. Be sure to keep an eye out for the wildlife that also calls Alaska home - from Eagles, Grey Wolves and the magnificent Bears.
