Enjoy an unforgettable journey amid misty valleys, ancient spruce trees, and silvery beaches that stretch on for miles. The Great Bear Rainforest is a 15.8-million-acre temperate rainforest in British Columbia. The rainforest takes its name from the elusive spirit bear, a rare black bear with a recessive gene that gives it a striking white coat. The spirit bear symbolizes harmony and peace in the folklore of the First Nations communities who have lived here for thousands of years. You might encounter grizzlies foraging on the shore, acrobatic humpback whales, even coastal wolves, known to swim from island to island. You will never forget your experience scenic cruising through one of the world’s last true wildernesses.
The ports of Alaska inspire visions of remote wilderness outposts, legendary gold-rush towns and Native Alaskan villages, all set amid lush forests and frigid, glacier-flanked waters. And while you’ll certainly find these things in and around Sitka, you’ll witness a unique slice of Alaskan history not found anywhere else. Russia controlled Alaska from the mid-1700s until the United States purchased it in 1867, and Sitka was settled as the capital of Russian America under the name New Archangel. Sailing into Sitka today, you’ll still see vestiges of Russia’s influence, including the unmistakable onion dome of St. Michael’s Cathedral and the Russian Bishop’s House, both National Historic Landmarks. Stop by the visitor center of the Sitka National Historical Park to peruse its interesting collections of Russian and Native Alaskan artifacts, and then join a ranger-led tour of the battlefield where Russia defeated the native Tlingit people. Sitka also boasts an abundance of epic natural scenery and wildlife. Take a walk up Castle Hill to enjoy an ideal vantage point across the water to the dormant volcano Mount Edgecumbe, and trips to the nearby Fortress of the Bear and the Alaska Raptor Center offer up-close encounters with some of Alaska’s most captivating creatures.

The Great Bear Rainforest is one of the largest remaining temperate rainforests in the world, stretching along the central and northern coast of British Columbia, Canada. Covering around 6.4 million hectares (about the size of Ireland), it spans a rugged coastline, fjords, islands, and dense old-growth forests. The region is remote and sparsely populated, with many areas accessible only by boat or plane.
The rainforest is home to towering ancient trees like western red cedar, Sitka spruce, and Douglas fir, some over 1,000 years old. Its rich ecosystem supports grizzly bears, black bears, and the rare spirit bear (a white-furred subspecies of black bear found only here). There are salmon-rich rivers that feed both wildlife and the forest ecosystem along with other marine life including humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, and seals.
