Built in 2009 and newly refurbished in 2025, MS Spitsbergen is an expedition ship designed for curious travellers who value small-ship comfort and big adventures. With space for just 150 guests, she’s the second smallest vessel in the HX fleet and technically classed as a large yacht, offering an intimate, relaxed atmosphere that feels more like a private expedition than a traditional cruise. Named after the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago, MS Spitsbergen is well suited to polar waters and rugged coastlines.

MS Spitsbergen offers a range of comfortable accommodations.
Polar Inside cabins are perfect for those who plan to spend their time out on deck or in the ship’s shared spaces. These windowless cabins are clean, cosy and equipped with soft beds and en-suite bathrooms, offering a straightforward and restful place to recharge between adventures.
If you’d prefer a view, Polar Outside cabins offer either a window or porthole, connecting you to the ever-changing seascape. Thoughtfully designed with smart storage and all the essentials for a good night’s sleep, they provide a comfortable space to retreat to without missing a moment of the journey outside.
Arctic Superior cabins strike a balance between style and practicality. Featuring modern furnishings, large windows, and tea and coffee-making facilities, they offer a relaxed and refined space to enjoy the scenery. Flexible sleeping arrangements in some cabins make them a great choice for couples, solo travellers or families after a bit of comfort.
For something truly special, Expedition Suites deliver added space, enhanced comfort and the best views on board. With expansive windows and private balconies - some even featuring hot tubs - these suites are ideal for guests who want to fully immerse themselves in the landscape. Inside, you’ll find a seating area, plush bedding, a Nespresso machine, and even binoculars to help you spot passing wildlife from the comfort of your room.
The entertainment on MS Spitsbergen is unlike traditional cruise ships; it’s all about the destination.
On MS Spitsbergen, the Expedition Launch Pad is where all the action kicks off. Located on Deck 3, it is the gateway to exploration. It’s a practical, no-fuss space equipped with changing areas, kit-up zones and lockers, making gearing up for small-boat landings quick and easy. The friendly Expedition Team typically begins here by running through safety briefings and offering expert tips, ensuring every excursion is well-coordinated and smoothly executed.
At the heart of MS Spitsbergen’s onboard experience is the Science Centre on Deck 6 - a hands-on hub designed to spark curiosity and deepen your connection to the destinations you visit. This interactive space is packed with high-tech gadgets and state-of-the-art equipment, from touchscreen displays to scientific instruments, all there to help you get closer to the natural world. It’s where guests, crew and the Expedition Team come together to share knowledge, swap stories and learn from one another. With lecture spaces, a small library, and areas dedicated to workshops in subjects like photography and biology, the Science Centre brings every expedition to life.
MS Spitsbergen boasts three observation decks. On Deck 5, there’s a spacious outdoor promenade with terraces. Ascend to Deck 7, where the sun deck and hot tubs await beside the aft. And at the very top on Deck 8, the outdoor deck offers open-air seating and unobstructed 360° views.
Tucked away on Deck 5, just off the main lobby, you’ll find the shop. Despite its modest size, it’s thoughtfully stocked with practical items like polar-proof clothing and expedition gear, plus a selection of souvenirs.
MS Spitsbergen has two restaurants and one bar.
Located on Deck 5, Restaurant Aune is the main dining venue onboard. Serving three meals a day, Aune offers a relaxed and welcoming setting where the focus is firmly on flavour and freshness. Start your day with a generous breakfast buffet, enjoy a laid-back lunch, and round things off with a beautifully presented dinner that reflects the regions you’re exploring. For the evenings you’d prefer to dine in your cabin, Aune’s handy takeaway service means you can still enjoy a delicious, freshly made meal in comfort.
Also tucked away on Deck 5, Brygga Bistro is MS Spitsbergen’s go-to spot for light bites and casual dining outside of main restaurant hours. Whether you’ve just come back from a shore landing or fancy a quick bite between activities, Brygga serves up a tempting selection of snacks and lighter meals in a relaxed setting.
The Explorer Lounge & Bar, also on Deck 5, is the social heart of MS Spitsbergen - a cosy, inviting space where guests naturally gather to unwind. With sweeping views through large picture windows, it’s the ideal spot to watch the scenery drift past, swap stories from the day’s adventures, or attend an evening briefing with the Expedition Team.
MS Spitsbergen’s relaxation and fitness facilities might be small, but they’re mighty.
On Deck 7, MS Spitsbergen’s open-air hot tubs offer one of the most relaxing vantage points on board. With space for five in each, these two bubbling retreats are perfect for easing tired muscles after a day of adventure - or simply sitting back and taking in the scenery as it unfolds around you. Further along, you’ll find the sauna. After a day of exploring in the elements, there’s nothing quite like stepping into the heat and gazing out at the horizon as the ship glides through spectacular scenery.
Also on Deck 7, MS Spitsbergen’s gym may be compact, but it’s surprisingly well equipped. With treadmills, bikes, free weights, and even a ping pong table. It’s a great spot to squeeze in a bit of exercise between landings.
HX travels to over 250 destinations across more than 30 countries, spanning five continents. MS Spitsbergen sails her guests to some of the world’s most impressive destinations, like Europe and the Polar Regions.
Each of her itineraries is carefully curated to offer an immersive experience, and you can make the most of your time in port with HX’s extensive range of shore excursions. When cruising Norway, enjoy a Nordic sauna and polar plunge in Svolvær. In Iceland, join a spectacular Snowcat tour to the top of Snæfellsjökull.
