The emphasis on the Saga Sapphire is exceptional service, outstanding cuisine and a slow-paced, yet highly invigorating journey to exotic destinations. Staff go out of their way to make sure that passengers are comfortable, relaxed and indulged throughout their trip. The Saga Sapphires loyal clientele return again and again, thanks in no small part to the highly sociable atmosphere and classic, sophisticated elegance.
The Saga Sapphire is an exceptionally stylish, contemporary ship, that offers eclectic yet fashionable décor. There are a number of homely British touches that help passengers to feel at home away from home, but even these fit seamlessly into the sophisticated aesthetic. The centrepiece of this magnificent ship is the triple-height atrium lobby, which underlines the style and elegance the guests enjoy. A ship carrying no more than 720 passengers, you can expect a welcoming, sociable atmosphere that regular Saga travellers simply adore.
After a busy day’s sightseeing on one of the spectacular Saga excursions, there is nothing better than returning to your own private, blissful cabin space to relax, unwind and indulge.
The accommodation has been designed with comfort in mind, with bright, spacious cabins that are well suited to long journeys. Ample storage and stylish design are a feature of each and every room, with the accommodation consisting of several different categories, each designed to meet the varied requirements of the ship’s clientele.
A unique and highly valued feature of the Sapphire is the 44 single-occupancy cabins that carry no additional supplement. Incredibly, these rooms do not suffer in terms of size, offering the same expansive space as the doubles, with some even boasting balconies, and all with the same amenities as other cabins. Other accommodation options include the Grand Suites. These sizeable suites offer everything you will need for refined, private living. There’s a separate bedroom with double bed, and a living area with sofa, dining table, and chairs.
The tiled bathroom has a large tub, separate shower, and plenty of storage space for toiletries. The standard cabins come as both Interior and Outside-View, and measure an ample 220 square foot, some of the biggest afloat and 50 square feet more than the industry standard. Equally stylish in decoration, these suites come stocked with a mini-bar of complimentary drinks.
Meals on the Sapphire are an open dining and seating affair. You are welcome to arrive at any time throughout the evening, and will be seated alongside your fellow guests for an evening of exquisite cuisine and delightful ambience. A fixed reservation can be made with the Maître d’, if you are eating with family or friends, but in the main expect a sociable dining experience shared with other passengers.
One of the signature approaches to dining that is taken on Saga cruises is to adapt the menu to the places you are visiting. By taking inspiration from the local area, you are ensured a diverse and highly delicious blend of enchanting cuisines.
The main restaurant is called Pole to Pole, a sophisticated and stylish venue, with large, ocean-view picture windows that create a bright, engaging space. Waiter service is available every mealtime, as you are given the opportunity to sample from the varied, highly refined chef-prepared menu. The wine list has been specifically designed to complement the food, with a range of options available to suit even the most discerning of palates. For a more casual experience, there is the Verandah Restaurant. With the option to dine both inside and out, you are also given the opportunity to choose between self-serving buffet and waiter-served dinner.
Either way, you are guaranteed a fantastic array of dishes to choose from, freshly prepared, that you can enjoy whilst looking out over the pool and open Boat Deck area. For something a little more exotic, there is also the option of the East to West restaurant, an Asian-fusion style venue that delivers a stunning blend of Indian, Sri Lankan and Thai cuisines in an intimate 64-seat, wood-carving adorned setting.
For evening entertainment, head to The Britannia Lounge, which as well as a fabulous drinking spot, also acts as the ship's theatre. An open, welcoming space, it is the perfect spot from which to experience an evening that can shift from casual drinks to explosive choreographed productions in the same night!
In keeping with the ship itself, expect the classic cruise ship selection, with singing, dancing and even highly talented and sophisticated string quartets. Most cruises will also feature visiting performers from major productions on the stage, including the West End.
One of the most popular pre-dinner venues is the Cooper's, themed around comedian Tommy Cooper. Expect to see his trademark red fez incorporated into lampshades and a selection of his classic one-liners embroidered onto cushions. The walls are adorned with photographs of the man himself, together with a collection of other comedians down the years.
Half-hour comedy shows are occasionally shown on the bar's flat-screen TV. Most exciting perhaps, and why Saga receives such praise for customer service, are the surprise "magic moments" that they spring upon guests. These will never be publicised in advance, and are unique to each travelling party. Expect a spectacular show whatever the occasion, and a treat that will likely be linked directly to the destinations you are visiting.
To create an immersive and truly opulent spa experience, Saga have teamed up with leading aromatherapy skincare brand, Decléor. Expect ultimate relaxation and pure pampering from the highly talented beauty therapists on-board.
Choose from an array of tempting treatments, all of which utilise the exclusive essential oils and natural ingredients found in Decléor. Try facials, massages, manicures, tailored wellbeing programmes and special treatments just for gentlemen. There are plenty of facilities you can use free of charge during your cruise too. These include the heated indoor pool and whirlpool bath. There is also a fully-equipped gymnasium, to help you stay healthy and energised before experiencing the rejuvenating spa treatments available.
Whether you are looking to get active or simply relax, there is plenty to do aboard the Sage Sapphire. With the ship reserved exclusively for adults you can expect a sophisticated and tranquil experience. Activities can range from quizzes and talks, to painting and photography classes, letting you learn and enjoy your time in a relaxed and highly peaceful environment.
The Saga Sapphire boasts a library containing a collection of more than 3,000 books, with more per guest than any other classic cruise line on the water. The library is the ideal spot to nestle down with a great book or newspaper and simply feel indulged. With a number of destination books, you can also plan your adventures in advance, or borrow a DVD for a comfortable afternoon’s watching in your personal cabin space.
Learn a thing or two in The Academy, with informative lectures and interactive learning sessions available. Saga even give you the opportunity to borrow the on-board iPads, to browse the web and take your lessons with you. A special feature of the Saga Sapphire are the shore excursion programmes they hold, led by the best local guides available from the destinations you visit.
The tours are incredibly popular with guests, as a great way to expand your understanding of foreign cultures and spend time exploring with new friends. A Saga representative will travel with you on every tour bus, keeping on-hand to deliver advice and meet every need you could have along the way.
