Alaska may be part of the USA, but it’s a world apart from anywhere else in North America. Its icy Arctic vistas are among the most breathtaking known to man, exerting a hypnotic grip that has beguiled visitors around the world and changed – and claimed – countless lives. Moving from permafrost to almost permanent sunshine, the Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest and most breathtaking coral reef system. Stretching for 1,400 miles off the coast of Australia, it is the world’s biggest single structure created by living organisms and home to an amazing array of marine life. Its unique ecosystem includes thirty species of whales, dolphins and porpoises and you will reflect on your privileged position as you watch them gambol and play in the bright blue waters. It’s little wonder that this incredible place is deeply sacred to Aboriginal peoples – you will find it an almost religious experience too.


Those who love exotic wildlife will also adore the Galápagos Islands. Straddling the Equator, off the coast of Ecuador, the Galápagos enthralled Charles Darwin with their amazing array of unique species. They will enchant you too, with brightly coloured marine iguanas, lava lizards and an incredible array of vividly pigmented birds vying for your attention.
