When preparing for a cruise, one of the things you’ll likely think about is luggage—how much you can bring and how you’ll manage it.
Unlike many other types of holidays, cruising offers much more flexibility regarding luggage allowances, allowing you to bring more than you might expect.
While most cruise lines offer unlimited luggage allowances, there are some practical considerations to keep in mind.
After all, while you can technically take as much as you want, that doesn’t mean it’s always a good idea.
There are plenty of things to consider before you start packing your bags, from flights to baggage handling and even storage space in your cabin.
Most cruise lines offer generous allowances, with many providing unlimited luggage for passengers. This gives you a great deal of freedom to pack everything you might need.
However, it’s important to remember that some cruise lines do have limits on individual luggage weight, typically around 23 kilograms per item.
If you’re embarking on a fly-cruise, things get a bit more complicated, as airline luggage policies will apply. These often come with weight limits and restrictions on the number of bags you can bring, so it’s essential to check your airline’s baggage policy before packing.

*Total Luggage Allowance refers to the overall weight or number of pieces of luggage that a passenger is permitted.
**Individual Luggage Allowance refers to the maximum allowable weight for a single piece of luggage.
What happens if my luggage exceeds the allowed weight or size limit?
If your luggage exceeds the allowed weight or size limit, you may face extra charges or be required to reduce the weight of your luggage. Some cruise lines may charge a fee for excess luggage, while others may ask you to repack and redistribute the contents. Always check the cruise line's policy before departure to avoid any surprises.
Are there restrictions on certain items of luggage?
Yes, there are restrictions on certain items. For example, many cruise lines do not allow passengers to bring large items like surfboards, bicycles, or large sports equipment unless prior arrangements are made. Additionally, cruise lines typically restrict the transport of hazardous materials such as flammable liquids or explosives. Alcohol is another commonly restricted item—most cruise lines only allow a small amount of alcohol to be brought onboard, and it may be subject to additional charges.
Can I bring a carry-on bag, and what are the size/weight limits for that?
Yes, you can bring a carry-on bag onboard, and the size/weight limits vary between cruise lines. Typically, carry-on bags must fit in the overhead compartment or under your cabin bed, so they should be smaller than checked luggage. Many cruise lines allow one carry-on bag per passenger, often limited to around 15-20 kilograms in weight and a certain dimension size (such as 55x40x20 cm). It’s always best to check your cruise line’s specific guidelines to avoid any confusion.
What are the rules for luggage when disembarking at the end of the cruise?
Yes, you can bring a carry-on bag onboard, and the size/weight limits vary between cruise lines. Typically, carry-on bags must fit in the overhead compartment or under your cabin bed, so they should be smaller than checked luggage. Many cruise lines allow one carry-on bag per passenger, often limited to around 15-20 kilograms in weight and with dimensions of approximately 55x40x20 cm.
We typically recommend packing a carry-on bag with essentials in case your checked luggage takes longer to arrive in your cabin. This can be particularly useful if you arrive on board earlier than expected, as it gives you something to change into while you wait for your luggage to be delivered. Having a carry-on also ensures you have the necessary items for the first few hours of your cruise—whether you want to freshen up, change into swimwear for the pool, or enjoy a meal in one of the onboard restaurants.
Can I bring my own alcohol or bottled drinks onboard?
Many cruise lines restrict the amount of alcohol passengers can bring onboard. For example, some cruise lines allow passengers to bring one or two bottles of wine per stateroom, while others may have a stricter no-alcohol policy. For soft drinks, bottled water, and other beverages, most cruise lines have no restrictions, but it’s important to check specific policies, as some lines may charge corkage fees for alcohol brought onboard. For fly-cruises, airline regulations regarding liquids may also apply. Read more here.
What should I do if my luggage is lost or damaged during the cruise?
If your luggage is lost or damaged, you should immediately report it to the cruise line’s guest services or the port’s baggage handling team. They will likely ask you to fill out a claim form. If the issue happens early in the cruise, they may be able to deliver your luggage to you while onboard. For damaged luggage, the cruise line may offer compensation or a repair option. It’s advisable to have travel insurance that covers lost or damaged luggage, as this can help mitigate the cost of replacement or repairs.
Can I ship my luggage to the port ahead of time?
Yes, some cruise lines offer luggage shipping services where you can send your luggage directly to the departure port ahead of time. This is particularly helpful for fly-cruise passengers, as it allows you to avoid handling large bags at the airport. However, this service may not be available for all cruise lines or ports, so be sure to confirm the options with your cruise line. There may also be additional fees for shipping, and it’s important to ensure your luggage arrives on time.
