Please allow me to introduce myself - my name is Gary King and I’m very much looking forward to being a regular contributor to the ROL Cruise blog. Over the next few months I’ll be reporting on a variety of topics that I hope you will find both interesting and informative. Among the subjects I’ll be covering are ROL’s excellent range of cruises, some sneak previews of upcoming packages and insider tips on how to get the best out of any trip.

I’m passionate about travel and have been writing about it for over 15 years. I write for many publications including The Daily Telegraph, have worked extensively for organisations such as the Australian, Canadian and Barbados Tourist Boards, and I generally spend as much time as possible seeing all that our great planet has to offer.

When I tell people that I’m a travel writer, nine times out of ten I’m asked, “where’s the best place that you’ve ever visited?” Now, that’s a tricky question because I’m a firm believer that the essence of rewarding travel is not only visiting somewhere but actually experiencing it to gain a little insight and understanding.

That’s one of the reasons why I’m particularly excited about writing about ROL – it’s not just about the journey, it’s also what you can learn along the way. For example, many of their cruises include on board lecture programmes with expert guest speakers and trips ashore featuring knowledgeable guides who bring these excursions to life. Pair this with likeminded fellow passengers and I think you have the perfect recipe for a holiday that is both enriching and relaxing.

Saying that though I’m not a complete travel purist who spends his every waking hour away attempting to get under the skin of a place. I like nothing more than leaving my laptop at home to indulge in some grade A downtime whether chilling on a sunbed, seeing the sights or enjoying a cocktail at sunset.

This is what a good cruise gets right because a well-appointed ship will have an atmosphere that is restful yet stimulating at the same time. I’m sure it’s got something to do with the fact that you’re always sailing towards new horizons with all the potential for the adventure that brings. There are few things better than waking up in a new port or city after a good night’s sleep with a frisson of eager expectation about what lays ahead.

Anyway, just in case you were wondering about my favourite trip –  it’s either racing on skis to the North Pole avoiding hungry polar bears; or it could be spending a few days of quiet isolation on the tiny Lady Elliot Island on the Great Barrier Reef; or camping in the jungles of Sumatran in which I was chased by an errant orangutan whilst trying to take its picture. Saying that though I adore having a crab salad lunch in Port Isaac in Cornwall, and the view from the Castel Sant'Angelo across the Tiber in Rome is to die for, or perhaps… oh I really don’t know! I can’t come up with a favourite, there are so many special moments that it’s impossible to pick one out.

And that my friends, is the beauty of travel. Every time you go away you create another big bank of experiences that are yours to treasure for many years to come. So join me as I trawl through Reader Offers’ rich repertoire of cruises to help you decide on a holiday that will provide you with memories that will undoubtedly last a lifetime.

Until next time, Gary
