Exploring Arnhem’s old city centre

Head to the old city centre and explore the spacious market square where you can see the stunning 15th-century St Eusebius’ Church tower which offers fine views across the city. Other historical highlights include the Carillon and the grand, marble tomb of the last Duke of Gelderland, Charles of Egmond. It is also worth seeing the 16th-century Old Town Hall, known as the Devils’ House after the devilish statues standing guard.

Enjoy the culinary delights

The Arnhem area is a wonderful place to enjoy some culinary delights, no matter whether you dine in an elegant castle restaurant, a quaint brasserie, or a traditional farmhouse garden. This is the perfect destination to enjoy some gorgeous local delicacies as well as international meals.

Tasty waffles are a firm favourite here and can be enjoyed with a variety of toppings, it is a great option for a quick bite to eat between exploring the area.

Commemorating history

Arnhem is known as the location of one of the most famous battles of the Second World War - The Battle of Arnhem, which was part of Operation Market Garden and fought in September 1944. A film released in 1977 called ‘A Bridge Too Far’ was inspired by the events of the battle. Go on a historic city stroll where several acknowledgements of the battle are commemorated. Alternatively, follow the Liberation Route past grand monuments and places of remembrance associated with the conflict.

Take a step back in time

Museums are plentiful across Arnhem and provide myriad opportunities to see a variety of artefacts up close. Experience history in the Netherlands Open Air Museum where special encounters and stories transport you back in time with the help of impressive architecture across the centuries. Alternatively, The Dutch Wine Museum introduces visitors to all aspects of the history and production of wine around the country. The museum is located in one of the city’s old underground cellars which gives an authentic atmosphere. Learn about what Dutch viniculture entails; the vineyard, grapevines and the processes involved to produce a quality bottle of wine.
