Fifteen dramatic fjords are protected within this UNESCO World Heritage Site, including the spectacular Milford, Dusky and Doubtful Sounds.
One of the unusual features of Doubtful Sound is that it has two layers of water. The fresh water flows on top of the seawater, and the two never mix together. As a result, much of the marine life can be found closer to the surface.
The grand 19th century Victorian buildings are as characteristic to the city as the natural surroundings. Stroll through the historic part of town or travel by vintage train to view Otago Harbor, where seals and penguins sunbathe.
Known for its unique fusion of Scottish and Maori heritage, vibrant Dunedin is the second largest city of New Zealand’s South Island.
New Zealand’s Garden City is renowned for its English heritage and it’s easy to see why. Tree-lined avenues, backed by elegant Victorian buildings.
On the eastern side of New Zealand's North Island sits Napier, in Hawke's Bay. The entire city was rebuilt in the Art Deco style following an earthquake in 1931, giving Napier the best collection of authentic Art Deco buildings on the planet. Known for its wine, Napier boasts a cafe culture enjoyed year-round thanks to its sunny, Mediterranean-like climate. Nearby you can find the world's largest colony of gannets – a sleek, white sea bird known for its dramatic plunge-dive fish-catching technique – which can be viewed on a hike or a tractor ride on the beach.
It's hobbit enthusiast's dream come true in Tauranga. This town on the Bay of Plenty, perched on New Zealand's North Island, is just a short trek from the rolling hills of Waikato — this is where you'll find Hobbiton, the location that served as the Shire in the uber-popular "Lord of the Rings" movies. But the fantastic findings of Tauranga don't end there. Cruise to Tauranga and hike to the summit of nearby Mount Maunganui, an extinct volcano that offers panoramic views of the city and the Pacific Ocean below. Or take the one-hour drive to Rotorua, a geothermal fairyland where you can soak in the rejuvenating waters of the natural hot springs.
Stretched over a volcanic field on New Zealand's North Island is multicultural Auckland. The country's largest city, this thriving hub offers everything you would expect.
Look up — the Bay of Islands is said to have the world's second bluest sky after Rio de Janeiro. Located on the northwestern coast of New Zealand's North Island, the sea here is also a beautiful shade of turquoise, dotted with 144 subtropical islands of the area. Cruise to Bay of Islands and check out Urupukapuka Island, where you can hike through Maori village sites or relax on the white-sand beach. Visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds — this is the site where the treaty that made New Zealand into its own nation was signed. Or head out on a dolphin spotting cruise to see the population of bottlenose dolphins that call these waters home.
From the Sydney Opera House to Bondi Beach, man and Mother Nature contribute in equal measure to this splendid city.
Airlie Beach is the Queensland coast's go-to spot for maritime adventure. It's the mainland town that allows the easiest access to the 74 incredible Whitsunday Islands — take the ferry out and spend your day relaxing by clear aqua waters at Whitehaven Beach or snorkeling among the heart-shaped portion of the Great Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Or stick to the mainland: Walk the Bicentennial Walkway along the Airlie Beach waterfront, popping into a cafe for a late-morning flat white (the Australian signature latte). Take a dip in Airlie Beach Lagoon, or head to Conway National Park, where you can hike your way through rain forest to panoramic views of the city and the harbor.
A friendly city, loved by residents and popular with tourists. More than just a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns offers plenty to do.
Once a sleepy fishing village, Port Douglas today is a resort town that doubles in population during peak tourist season from May to September. Located an hour's drive north of Cairns, the town's main attraction is its easy access to two World Heritage sites: Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. Head to Mossman Gorge in Daintree for bushwalking among lushly forested groves – the landscape here is up to 180 million years old, and some of its plant species may have coexisted with dinosaurs. Cruise to Port Douglas and take a reef-exploration tour, which allows you to snorkel among the coral, crustaceans and colourful fish. Or take a dip in the crystal-blue waters at Four Mile Beach, surrounded by rainforest views.
Willis Island is the only permanently inhabited island in the Coral Sea Islands Territory. Located beyond the Great Barrier Reef, this island stands 280 miles from Cairns. The only residents on the 7.7-hectare sandy island are a handful of Australian Bureau of Meteorology staff members working at the weather monitoring station. The main attractions are the sights you'll see as you cruise through the Coral Sea. Spot tropical birds like black noodies, sooty terns and wedge-tailed shearwaters. Cruise to Willis Island to see the Great Barrier Reef stretch beneath the turquoise waters and the exotic fish that swim here, including angel fish, clown fish and hammerhead sharks.
