One ship, two perspectives: Cruise & Maritime Voyages’ Columbus
Life on board Columbus, Cruise & Maritime Voyages flagship.

Last month, a few members of the team were lucky enough to experience a few days on board Cruise & Maritime Voyages flagship, Columbus. Kathryn Londors, Cruise Consultant at ROL Cruise, has cruised a few times before but never aboard Columbus. Here’s an overview of her time on board:
“We embarked Columbus at London Tilbury and I was shocked by how easy it was. Though Tilbury port is much smaller than the likes of Southampton and Dover, it was the smoothest embarkation I’ve ever experienced. One thing that really stood out to me was just how great the staff were; they were so helpful and friendly, and nothing was too much trouble. For example, we needed to link multiple debit cards to our on board account, but it didn’t cause any problems.
“When we got on board, I headed straight for our cabin and I was really surprised by the size of it. Columbus is much smaller than previous ships I had been on but that didn’t mean she had any less space. We had a Superior Twin Inside cabin and it was so spacious.
“The public spaces were also very spacious and always alive with people chattering, making newfound friends and talking to old ones. Throughout the day there was plenty of entertainment, with a nightly stage show, live singers and discos in the evening. We really enjoyed sitting back and relaxing with a cocktail in hand as the production dazzled before us. The drinks menu had a lot to offer; wine, cocktails, beers, spirits, soft drinks, mocktails and speciality coffees all at very reasonable prices.
“The restaurants were also fantastic, with a dish to suit every taste and dietary requirement. The speciality dining option, The Grill, was beautiful and we left feeling very satisfied.
“My experience on board Columbus was fantastic and I would definitely sail with her again.”
This was Zarah Fayers’ (also a Cruise Consultant at ROL Cruise) first cruising experience. Here are her thoughts:
“Being new to cruise I was unsure of the embarkation process, but it was a lot smoother than I had anticipated. London Tilbury is a fantastic port, everything was clearly signposted and there was always a staff member available if we had any questions.
“As soon as we stepped on board I just had to explore, so I spent some time familiarising myself with the main areas of the ship. Columbus has incredible facilities and there really is something for everyone. You could start the day with yoga, watch a film, read a book in the library or knit then take part in deck games, quizzes or bridge.
“I made it to the cabin just in time for our suitcases to be delivered. I thought the process of luggage handover was really efficient; your suitcase is taken before you’ve even parked your car, giving you the freedom to board the ship with only hand luggage, enabling a stress-free first day and an immediate start to your holiday.
“Sadly, we couldn’t dock in Amsterdam on our second day, due to rough seas and high winds. But this wasn’t a problem, the attentive staff added a number of daytime activities to our itinerary, one of which was an on board treasure hunt. This provided a great opportunity to get to know the ship even better and discover small facts. Did you know that Columbus offers a more traditional and leisurely style cruising experience?
“We had a little longer in Hamburg than originally planned. Cruise & Maritime organised shuttle buses so that we could easily transfer from the port to the centre of the city. The whole process was seamless.
“My favourite part of the entire trip was being able to explore Columbus’ bridge. A very welcome surprise, we all thoroughly enjoyed it. The Captain was really welcoming, he and the other staff members showed us around, answered any questions we had and allowed us to take lots and lots of photos.
“Overall my first cruise was incredible. I thoroughly enjoyed my time on board Columbus and would highly recommend her to everyone.”
