A gem of architectural history

ROL Cruise recommends…

Head to Haidplatz

Once the scene of medieval jousting tournaments, Haidplatz is the triangular square in the centre of the town. Hugged by pastel-coloured buildings all boasting 13th-century features and quaint, white-washed windows. Wander around the area and take note of the famous statues that are dotted along its cobbles to get a glimpse into the rich history of the towns past lives.

Find the seat of royalty

The Thurn Und Taxis Palace is a must-see when in the town of Regensburg, converted into an opulent palace by the House of Thurn und Taxis, a wealthy family who lived in the town and made their money in the postal industry. Previously a Monastery, the buildings are one of the few examples of historic German architecture and can be explored for a small fee.

Take a wander

A wander around the town will lead you to small, windy cobbled streets, independent restaurants and Old Stone Bridge as the town crosses the river. A feat of medieval engineering, the bridge is an iconic landmark in the town and dates back to the 12th-century. Based on a model of the bridges of Prague in the Czech Republic, the stone masonry crosses the river Danube and is the perfect spot for a picture- postcard snapshot.

See some famous faces

The Walhalla sits 11 km outside of Regensburg but is well worth the trip. This German temple is infamous in Bavaria and stands proudly above the Danube River and offers outstanding views of the surrounding area. Build in the 17th-century, the building is said to have been built to honour Germany’s famous historic speakers and public figures. Head into the town centre and book a coach trip to the location, it really is a spectacle not to be missed.
