Cruising Drake Passage

Crossing the Drake Passage Wed 21 Dec 2022

Cruising Drake Passage

To make sure you are ready for the days of exploration ahead of you, the Expedition Team will begin a series of insightful lectures over at the Science Center. Each member of the Expedition Team are experts on different subjects, and you’ll find them to be walking, talking treasure troves of fascinating stories and information

★Antarctica Experience★ Fri 23 Dec 2022

The landscapes of Antarctica stretch as far as your eyes can see – a beautiful realm preserved by pristine snow and ice. Tabular icebergs, parts of the great shelves tower above the waters while ancient glaciers give birth to blue-hued icebergs that are sculpted by wind and sun. This is another world, devoid of human influence and a haven for wildlife like whales, penguins and seals. You have five days to take in every magical moment and jaw-dropping scenery Antarctica grants you. This could be gazing at distant white mountains during a walk ashore or having a playful pair of Weddell seals surface next to your small explorer boat to take a peek at you with their large inquisitive eyes. Or being in the winning lottery of those who can join optional but weather-dependent activities like kayaking, snowshoeing or even camping. These are the kinds of experiences that await you in Antarctica. Rest assured, Hurtigruten plan to make the most of each landing and will choose the best sites from numerous possible locations on the Antarctic Peninsula and its surrounding islands

Cruising Drake Passage

Crossing the Drake Passage Wed 28 Dec 2022

Cruising Drake Passage

The following two days at sea back across the Drake Passage can be spent sorting through all your amazing photos of Antarctica and making sure you still have space on your memory card for what’s to come next. You might also have the option to join workshops where you’ll channel your memories of Antarctica to paint penguins or learn how to tie complicated sailor’s knots

Penguins at Sparrow Point

The Falkland Islands Fri 30 Dec 2022

Penguins at Sparrow Point

The far-flung Falkland archipelago is split between the two main islands of East and West Falkland and nearly 800 smaller islands. Enjoy three days of exploration here and the exact landing sites for each day will be determined by local conditions at the time. After the barren white scenery of Antarctica, you might be a little relieved to see grassy hills, blooming wildflowers, stunning white-sand beaches and turquoise waters. Still, it won’t be too dissimilar in that there are several thousand penguins here for you to catch sight of too! Over these few days, we will try and see colonies of penguins, which often have families of fur seals mixed in among them too

Penguins at Sparrow Point

The Falkland Islands Sun 01 Jan 2023

Penguins at Sparrow Point

For the first time in more than a week, you’ll also encounter signs of civilisation again, be it the family-owned farms scattered around or the capital of Stanley on East Falkland where four fifths of the islands’ population live. When you visit, you’ll find the town is a slice of English life, including typical red buses and good ol’ pubs serving up British beer and friendly banter

Frequently Asked Questions about Hurtigruten

When can I book shore excursions?

Hurtigruten recommends pre-booking shore excursions. This can be done up to four weeks prior to departure (two weeks if paid by credit card) at the rates presented. Shore excursions are also available to book on board but spaces may be limited. Please note: all excursions booked on board will be charged in Norwegian Kroner.

Is there a dress code on board?

There is no official dress code on board but some guests choose to change to casualwear for dinner. The weather in Norway can vary during the course of each voyage (or even during the day!) so we recommend reading our climate zone packing guide to ensure you’re ready for every possibility.

What cuisine is served on board?

Norwegian cuisine is served on board. Chefs use only the very best locally sourced, seasonal ingredients which are collected from port each day and used to prepare a range of delicious dishes.

Does Hurtigruten cater to allergies, intolerances or specific diets?

Specific diets can be catered for if requested in good time. Passengers on strict diets may find that there is limited choice. A 3-course vegan menu is available in the evenings on voyages of 12-days.

What activities are available on board?

Most Hurtigruten ships along the Norwegian coast have an Expedition Team who undertake special activities on board such as lectures and presentations, on-deck guiding as well as hikes and outdoor activities in many ports. The majority of activities take place both inside the ships and out on deck and are designed around the season you’re sailing in. Hurtigruten aims to get guests closer to unique environments.

What are my payment options on board?

Visa, American Express, MasterCard and Diners Card are all accepted as payment options on board. Norwegian Kroner (NOK) is the on board currency.

Can I do laundry?

Laundry rooms with washing machines, dryers and irons are available on all ships. Tokens can be purchased at reception.

Which languages are spoken on board?

The official languages on board are Norwegian and English, though some service crew also speak German. The majority of shore excursions are guided in two or three languages.

Will I have access to the internet?

Yes, wireless internet is available on board for a small fee, unless already included in your Select or Platinum fare.

What is Hurtigruten’s gratuity policy?

It is not common practice to tip on Hurtigruten ships on the coastal voyage. If you feel that crew members should be rewarded for providing exceptional service, tip boxes are placed in the restaurant together with envelopes.
