The Amazon rainforest is rapidly burning as thousands of fires rage across it. This is an environmental catastrophe and we want to help.
There are more than 2,500 active fires, the smoke from which is visible from space. The effects of damage to the Amazon go far beyond Brazil and its neighbouring countries. The sky in Sāo Paulo turned black due to smoke drifting from the fires 2,700km away. The rainforest generates more than 20% of the world’s oxygen and is home to 10% of the world’s known biodiversity. Without it, the world would drastically change, impacting everything from farms to drinking water.
WWF has released an urgent appeal to fight the immediate emergency and support those on the front line dealing with the threats of fire and loss of forest. With the money raised, WWF’s Amazon teams will work alongside local organisations to carry out urgent work on the ground.
Alongside WWF we want to:
- Support key local and indigenous communities’ needs for medical support, firefighter training and security
- Work with local governments where possible on procedures for fighting fires and deforestation
- Campaign for stronger action from the government
Which is why for every cruise booking made to the Amazon we will donate £30 to the Amazon emergency appeal.
