A town hugged by Germany and Austria

ROL Cruise recommends…

A town ruled by the river

At the confluence of three rivers, Passau has been ruled by water for thousands of years. Bringing wealth through salt (also known as Europe’s white gold), the port of Passau has been an important trading point for Germany since the Medieval times and continues to attract visitors to its shores today. A wander around the town will offer hidden mementoes to the town’s rich history, so keep your eyes peeled as you explore the streets

Churches galore

Not only does Passau host some of Europe’s most beautiful churches, but it is also home to some breathtaking ornate and decorative baroque-style architecture. St. Stephen’s Cathedral is no exception with its exquisite ceilings and visually magnificent detail. A visit to Passau is not complete without taking a wander around this ancient holy home and spotting the accents of gothic architecture as you pass.

A town plagued by ancient floods

Passau is a location situated on the banks of the Danube River and is situated on the confluence of three major European rivers, which means it’s never safe from potential flooding. Head to the Rathaus (German for Town Hall) and explore the ancient markings upon its walls, depicting the levels in which water has risen over the last 500 years. A visual representation of past floods dating all the way back to 1501.

Take a bike to two countries

Being located so close to the border of Austria, a bike ride between Germany and Austria is a real possibility. Hire yourself a bike from Passau, ride along the river and through the number of forests dotted along the route before ending up in Wernstein, Austria a couple of miles later. What better way to experience the stunning countryside both countries have to offer than on two wheels?
