As cruising has evolved over time, it’s become a lot more than simply sailing to sunny beaches and drinking cocktails. There’s now a vast range of cruise types available for you to find a voyage perfectly tailored to you. Whether you’re an avid traveller but a first-time cruiser or an experienced cruiser looking to try something new, why not take our quiz to find out your perfect cruise style?

\r\n

Different types of cruises:
\r\n
    \r\n

Expedition cruises
\r\n
    \r\n

Looking to embrace some of life’s wildest adventures? An expedition cruise is an amazing way to uncover the world’s best journeys. From the northern lights to Antarctic explorations, an expedition cruise is life-changing. Endeavour to embrace some of the world’s most amazing sites, all whilst travelling in comfort and style.
\r\n
    \r\n

“I’ve enjoyed expedition cruises in both Antarctica and the Galápagos Islands,” Janet from Planet Janet Travels told us. “Both have truly been out-of-this-world experiences. It’s such a thrill to visit remote destinations with pristine landscapes of amazing beauty - and the opportunity to view incredible wildlife up close and personal. In Antarctica, adorable penguins are always the star attraction, they certainly stole my heart! In the Galápagos, I was mesmerised by prehistoric-looking marine iguanas, amazing seabirds and ancient giant land tortoises. All of them unafraid of man!”
\r\n
    \r\n

We asked Janet why she would recommend an expedition cruise, “Expedition ships are smaller (often 100-200 passengers), allowing them to visit a variety of remote landing sites. On both cruises, we enjoyed twice-daily shore excursions, often reached by Zodiac. Each landing, which was led by excellent naturalist guides, was unique. Back on board the ship, the naturalists gave interesting talks about the flora and fauna that we were seeing. Learning was never such fun!
\r\n
    \r\n

“And, never fear! Expedition cruising doesn’t mean roughing it. After your day of exploration out in nature, you get to return to the comforts of the ship to enjoy a great meal and share exciting stories of the day with your fellow adventurers. It doesn’t get better than that!”
\r\n
    \r\n

Luxury cruises
\r\n
    \r\n

Luxury cruises allow you to travel the world with everything taken care of. With elegant ships and highly-professional staff, your every need will be taken care of whilst you cruise. If you’re looking for a holiday where you can fully unwind and want to experience some of the best service, food and accommodation possible, luxury cruising will exceed your expectations.
\r\n
    \r\n

We chatted to Flavia from Ships and Champagne about her luxury cruise experience, she told us; “I was invited on a cruise to the Caribbean in March last year. We sailed from Puerto Rico to Barbados calling at St Croix and St Lucia. It was absolutely wonderful. I have also been invited for lunch and ship tours aboard other luxury cruise lines including Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Azamara.”
\r\n
    \r\n

We asked Flavia why everyone should try luxury cruising, “A luxury cruise is the ultimate hassle-free way to cruise. Everything is taken care of for you. The crew will know every guest by name and will make sure they are aware of your personal preferences before you board. Furnishings and bedding are far superior to that of other cruise lines and there are more luxury amenities in the room. There’s also more included in the cruise fare, such as speciality restaurants, drinks, Wi-Fi and shore excursions, making it better value for money in the long run.
\r\n
    \r\n

“Another benefit to luxury cruising is that the ships are smaller and carry fewer guests. This means there is lower guest to staff ratios, more square footage per passenger and no queues to get on or off in port. The ships often dock within walking distance of the main town, unlike the larger ships, which are usually further away.”
\r\n
    \r\n

No-fly cruises
\r\n
    \r\n

For those wanting to holiday without hassle, no-fly cruises do exactly that, offer cruises without the need to step on a plane. There’s no need to worry about travelling to the airport and then a distant cruise port before your voyage even starts. Instead, enjoy a great holiday from a UK port. Departing from Southampton, Portsmouth, Liverpool, Newcastle, London Tilbury and Dover, a no-fly cruise can still take you to far-flung corners of the world and then back home again.
\r\n
    \r\n

River cruises
\r\n
    \r\n

River cruises allow you to meander through the heart of countries and cultures. By opting for a river cruise, you’ll be able to enjoy the history of a place and experience it from a completely unique angle. From trips down the Mekong to scenic voyages along the Douro, there are plenty of options to make sure you can find something perfect for you. There is a lot more to cruising than just the ocean and river cruising proves that wholeheartedly.
\r\n
    \r\n

Solo cruises
\r\n
    \r\n

A solo cruise may seem like a daunting idea to some but there really is no better way to see the world independently. By opting for a solo cruise, you’ll be able to decide exactly what you do, every minute of your holiday. Plus, you don’t need to worry about trying to negotiate awkward transport and moving between locations, as that is all taken care of by your ship. Simply unpack once and enjoy your trip.
\r\n
